German noun genders

Paste German text and read it back with every noun's gender and plural. Free, no account, nothing to install.

German writes neither the gender nor the plural into the noun, and neither follows reliably from the spelling, so both have to be learnt one noun at a time. Every capitalised word here is looked up in a table of 341,092 noun forms, inflected ones included, so Häusern finds das Haus. Where a spelling is genuinely several nouns, all of them are shown and none is chosen. Words the table does not hold are left plainly unmarked.

It looks words up; it does not read grammar. German capitalises its nouns, which is what makes this work, so at the start of a sentence — where every word is capitalised — it stays quiet unless the spelling is a noun and nothing else. Compounds are mostly missing from any dictionary; a German compound takes the gender of its last part, so der Gartenzaun follows der Zaun.
