Talkabout vs Tandem
Updated
Tandem is a phone-first app where you talk to people by text, voice note and video. Talkabout is a free, browser-based text chat for adults with corrections built in. Choose Tandem if you want to speak out loud. Choose Talkabout if you'd rather write, want no app and no approval wait, and like seeing corrections right in the conversation.
We run Talkabout, so read this with that in mind. We have kept to what each service says on its own pages: Tandem's FAQ on 19 October 2026, and its overview and web pages on 17 September 2026. Plans and limits change, so check them before you commit.

What Tandem does well
Speaking practice. Tandem describes itself as an app for one-to-one partnerships by text, audio and video chat. If your goal is to speak, that matters more than anything else on this page.
Learning tools. Tandem has in-app correction and translation tools, and its overview describes Language Parties, live audio rooms.
Languages that line up. Once accepted, you're shown members who speak what you're learning and are learning what you speak.
Where Talkabout is different
No approval wait. Tandem's FAQ says each application is individually reviewed and can take time. On Talkabout you sign up, fill in a short profile and start.
Nothing to install. It works in the browser from the first minute, on a phone or a laptop.
Free filters. Language, level and country filters are free. Tandem's overview lists filters for members nearby or in other cities under its paid Tandem Pro plan.
Adults only. Everyone is 18 or older.
Contact details stay locked at first. Images and contact details unlock after two people have both written for a while.
What Talkabout doesn't have
No voice or video calls, no group rooms and no phone app in the stores yet. It's one-to-one text.
How to choose
- You want to speak out loud, and a phone app suits you: Tandem.
- You want to write, with corrections, in a browser and without an approval step: Talkabout.
- You're not sure: many people use both. Writing builds vocabulary; calls build speed.
