About Haitian Creole for English speakers

Haitian Creole and English are both written in the Latin alphabet, so you can start reading straight away.

The US Foreign Service Institute estimates that English speakers need about 36 weeks of full-time study to reach professional working proficiency in Haitian Creole. Regular conversation with native speakers is one of the best ways to fill those weeks.

How the exchange works

  1. Say what you speak and what you're learning. Talkabout shows you people who speak Haitian Creole natively and are learning English.
  2. Write to someone. Take turns: some messages in Haitian Creole, some in English, so you both get to practise.
  3. Fix each other's messages. Suggest a correction on any message and your partner sees exactly what changed. You choose how much you want corrected.

How Talkabout keeps scammers out

Who can join Talkabout?
Adults only. Anyone who gives a birthdate under 18 is turned away, and the account stays closed.
Can a stranger send me photos or ask for my number straight away?
No. Photos and contact details unlock only after you have both written to each other, and new accounts can only start a few conversations a day.
What happens to someone who tries to scam people?
Report them from the chat and a moderator reads the report. If a rule was broken they can be warned, suspended or banned, and a banned email address cannot sign up again.
Whoever reported them hears that it was handled.
Should I ever send money to someone I met here?
Never. Nobody needs your money to practise a language with you. Requests for money, crypto or gift cards, sudden emergencies and pushes to another app are the signs to watch for.
