People look for sites like InterPals for different reasons: a different mix of members, more safety tools, voice and video, or an app they like better. Here are six places to look at, with what each one says about itself. Prices and rules change, so the links at the bottom are worth a click before you sign up.

We make Talkabout, one of the six, and we say so where it matters. For a direct comparison with InterPals, see Talkabout compared with InterPals. For a wider look, see language exchange apps compared.

ConversationExchange

A long-running website for finding people to write to or meet. It says it is free to use, with a membership and a store linked from the site. It has no app, so you use it in a browser. It's the closest match if you liked InterPals mainly for written exchange.

MyLanguageExchange

Another browser-based site, with no app to download and voice and video in the browser. It offers a "Free Gold Membership" and has paid options too, though we couldn't read prices on its public pages. A good choice for searching by language.

Slowly

Slowly delivers letters with a delay based on the distance between you, which suits people who like the pen pal feel of InterPals more than live chat. It is an iOS and Android app. We last checked its store listing on 17 September 2026.

Tandem

Tandem is an app for finding a partner and talking by text, voice and video. It says it reviews every application and can reject people under 16. It is free to start, with a paid Pro subscription, and has a web version for people who registered in the app.

HelloTalk

HelloTalk is a social language app with text, voice and video chat. It is free to chat, with a paid VIP tier. It is built for phones, with apps for iOS and Android.

Talkabout

Talkabout is a free language exchange that runs in your browser, for adults only. Chats are live, with corrections next to the original message, and it limits what strangers can send: photos and contact details unlock only after you've both written. It has no voice or video, no app-store app and a much smaller community than the others on this list. If you're curious how that plays out in practice, try it with someone who speaks the language you're learning.

How to choose

  • You want letters and time: Slowly or ConversationExchange.
  • You want to talk out loud: Tandem or HelloTalk.
  • You want to type, fast, in a browser, with other adults: Talkabout.
  • You want a huge pool of members: the bigger apps and InterPals itself.

Whatever you pick, the usual safety rules apply: never send money, be wary of anyone who moves to another app straight away, and report people who ask. Staying safe in online language exchanges has the details.
